I’ve never met Brad Arnold.
But based on everything I’ve seen from his millions of fans on socials, and heard directly from his brothers in 3 Doors Down, that’s my loss.
On this day exactly one year ago, Brad publicly announced his Stage 4 kidney cancer diagnosis on Instagram.
The music world cried.
But before the world heard the news, Brad texted and then called his bandmates himself.
Bass Player Justin Biltonen says, “He sent us a message and told us what it was and, you know, he's extremely strong in his faith, so that was at the forefront of the conversation. I knew it wasn't great, but it's one of those things that you kind of can't allow yourself to think of death and of not beating it. So, for even up until probably November, I think everybody was like, this is going to work. Whatever they're doing is going to work. He's going to beat it. And you kind of have to keep that mindset no matter what.”
Long-time friend and bandmate, Chris Henderson, recalls, “When you get the call it’s like, oh man, he’s healthy, he’s young, he’s gonna beat this. He’s tough, there’s nothing he can’t take. I told my wife and she said, just be who he needs you to be, because I’m going to try to want to fix it.”
He hesitated a minute, holding back his emotions and said, “Couldn’t fix it.”
Guitarist Chet Roberts says,“It was obviously a shock to all of us. We had just gotten off tour. We were all like, what’s going on? This can’t be happening. But I wanted to believe he was going to be okay.”
Sadly, exactly 9 months later, we all learned it wasn’t going to be okay.
Brad passed away on February 7th, 2026.
“God took him” says Roberts. “God's got his reasons. They’re always perfect. He’s in a way better place right now and he’s not in pain anymore. It’s sad for all of us. Devastating. We all miss him. He inspired all of us. Now he doesn’t have to deal with this world anymore.”
Henderson says, “He was 7-years younger than me but I looked up to him in so many ways. He was a big shiny bright light. I just miss him.”
“We had so many amazing experiences and talks over the years,” says Biltonen. “He used to love hiking, so we used to go to a lot of national parks together and just talk. We talked about everything from music, to just life, the ins and outs of spiritualism, and things like that. The last time I saw him was down at MD Anderson. We talked for like three and a half hours. He was hopeful. I didn’t feel great leaving. That was the last time I saw him.”
If you’re on Instagram, I encourage you to read what the 3 Doors Down Fan Page wrote today:
“Today is a very emotional day for all of us. With all due respect to the family, friends, and each of you who, like us at 3doorsdown.fanpage, still deeply feel the loss of our eternal Brad, we would like to share a reflection that has brought much peace to our hearts.
Many of us are still processing the pain, but, by carefully observing the dates, it is impossible not to notice the hand of God and the care with which He sealed this journey.
📖 God's Number and Rest: In the Bible, the number 7 represents perfection and rest. It was on a May 7th that Brad shared his struggle with the world, and it was exactly on a February 7th that the Lord called him to eternal rest.
For a man who witnessed his faith to the end, this detail takes on a profound meaning: his mission was completed perfectly.
⏳ Nine Months of Dedication: Between the announcement and the departure, exactly nine months passed. In God's word, nothing is by chance. This time, symbolizing birth, was for Brad the time of his preparation for meeting the Father. He didn't just sing; he preached love and hope in his final months of life.
✨ Commitment to the Legacy: As it says in 2 Timothy 4:7: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
We, at 3doorsdown.fanpage, will never let his legacy be forgotten. His voice will continue to be the soundtrack of our lives and his strength, our example. Today he is no longer "Here Without You," but rather in the arms of the One who created him.
May his rest be as serene as the peace his music always brought us.” 🕊🤍
I do want to mention that I’m scheduled to interview Greg Upchurch, the band’s drummer, in less than two weeks at his home in Oklahoma.
We will give him the same opportunity to share all of his thoughts on Brad and everything else we’re slated to discuss for our upcoming Documentary series, called Unbreakable (Season One is on Amazon Prime, Tubi, and Spark TV), featuring Chet Roberts.
We captured many heartfelt responses from the band that we don’t have time to share here, but will hold nothing back when the episode or episodes air.
The way it looks now, we’ll likely have at least two episodes because there’s so much to discuss and document.
I do want each and every one of you to know that all of us at Fourth Door Media, the company co-founded by Chet Roberts, feel the very real responsibility to do business the way Brad would want us to.
With integrity.
With faith as our foundation.
And with a respect that every artist we partner with deserves.
We hope to be the organization that Brad can look down on and be proud of.
RIP Brad Arnold.
I never knew you.
I wish I did.
